Emergency/Crisis Mobile Applications – what’s wrong with them and how to make them better

Smartphone apps designed for emergency & crisis situations don’t provide what people actually need in a disaster, according to University of Calgary researchers who studied the digital response to the Fort McMurray wildfire. The team used specialized software to analyse nearly 70,000 tweets sent by affected residents during the catastrophe to gauge “what people really want” The results were pretty surprising — and not really good.

About the speaker

Maleknaz Nayebi is based at the Software Engineering Decision Support lab at the University of Calgary in Canada. She is pursuing a PhD in designing mobile apps with a focus on using data for decision support and innovation in software products. She has six years of professional software engineering experience in different industrial fields. Her main research interests are in mining software repositories, release engineering, open innovation and empirical software engineering. Maleknaz co-chaired RE 2018 data track and OISE 2015 workshop on Open Innovation in Software Engineering.

About the moderator

Philippe Borremans is an independent public relations consultant specialising in crisis communications and reputation management. He is one of the founders of Reputation & Co., a network of senior communications consultants active in Europe and Northern Africa. Previous to his current role, he was strategy director at PR Media, a Casablanca-based public relations agency with offices across the Maghreb region.
