Intrapreneurship plays an important role in innovation and performance. Research shows that organisations encouraging employees’ intrapreneurial spirit benefit from enhanced strategic outcomes. For example, companies that promote job autonomy and open communication channels see a significant increase in innovative ideas that contribute to long-term success of the organisation.

Therefore, it seems inevitable that organisations must foster a culture that encourages intrapreneurship – where employees act like entrepreneurs within the company. One critical component to unlock this innovative potential is effective communication.

So how can you foster this kind of culture and what role does communication play in all of this?

The key is to create an environment where communication flows freely. Open communication allows employees to share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate effectively across teams – without fear. When employees feel empowered to speak up, they are more likely to propose new solutions or improvements, which can lead to breakthrough innovations. An example is Amazon’s continued success in innovation which is attributed to a culture of communication that fosters curiosity and experimentation.

Effective communication doesn’t just help with the generation of ideas but also ensures their implementation. Studies reveal that companies with structured processes for managing and validating new ideas tend to unlock more innovation. For instance, when teams collaborate through brainstorming or innovation challenges, they can leverage diverse perspectives to tackle complex problems.

And as always, transparent communication from leaders plays a crucial role in supporting intrapreneurship. Openness to new ideas can empower employees to think creatively and when leadership is committed to fostering intrapreneurship, employees are more motivated to take ownership of their roles, approaching challenges as opportunities for innovation.

Statistics underline the impact of intrapreneurial cultures on innovation. According to a case study on Swedish entrepreneurship in some regions, such as Nordic countries, intrapreneurship is widely spread in nearly 9% of companies, contributing significantly to business development. While 9% is not a lot, it is still a and a good showcase why intrapreneurial culture should not be dismissed in bigger organisations. Meanwhile, according to Alex Goryachev, Chief Innovation Officer and Forbes Council Member, organisations that fail to nurture communication and collaboration often miss opportunities for innovation. He states that innovation is a collaborative effort and cannot happen in isolation, adding that effective communication across diverse, cross-functional teams is essential for achieving specific goals and fostering innovation. He also highlights the importance of clear and consistent communication during digital transformation initiatives to manage the high volume of information and ensure that important content is not lost in the noise. Communication with various stakeholders, both internally and externally, is crucial for successful innovation.

So, let’s unlock innovation through intrapreneurship by being the best communicators we can be!
