Project description
Following the discussion in June 2017, around communications professionals gathered at last week’s EACD regional event in Warsaw to further discuss the impact of fake news, this time with the focus on the decision-making process. The title of the session: “Making decisions in the times of fake news and post-truth”.
We thank our regional coordinator for Poland, Ewa Rzeczkowska, and the following speakers who took part in the discussion and shared their different point of views :
*Julia Izmalkowa, CEO, IZMALKOWA,
*Jakub Bojanowski, ERS Function Leader, Deloitte Central Europe,
*Wlodzimierz Schmidt, CEO, Internet Industry Employers’ Association IAB Poland,
*Andrzej Skworz, Founder, Press magazine,
*Prof. Krystian Jazdzewski, Head of Department of Genomic Medicine, Medical University of Warsaw
*Magdalena Macko, Senior Banking and Customer Experience Executive
Select conclusions of the discussion:
1. We should try to organize the chaos related with the term “fake news and post-truth”. We tend to mistake fake news with false news, with unconfirmed information, opinions and commentaries and information bubble;
2. It is possible to make proper decisions in the time of fake news and post-truth, if we do not allow ourselves to work under time pressure, and give space for thought, review and information search;
3. Access to checked = true information is a luxury, the credibility of information should be vouched by the authority of an institution; Professional information should be paid; People again turn to traditional media for information;
4. Psychological studies show delusion as one of the factors in the decision-making process; Delusion gives way to continuing living in peace; We often prefer “not to know”, because knowing forces us to make decisions; It is easier not to do anything;
5. Technology makes it harder to discern what is truth and what is not
